Even when on a losing streak, poker enriches your vocabulary

SHAGGY DOGS: TO CALL a person’s bluff is to test their claims and issue a challenge for them to reveal the truth.

Poker, from which the phrase derives, is essentially a game of deception where each player pretends to have the winning hand and the others have to consider the truth of that assertion against the value of the cards in their own hand.

Once play begins, the chips (money tokens) are placed on the table and then the chips are down (things are getting serious). The expression poker-faced, meaning to reveal no outward emotion, comes from this part of the game.

August 4th, 2008 by admin

Can’t Make Heads or Tails of Poker?

There is something exciting going on at parties. People are playing the simpler version of poker. However, you must get the hang of the basics before playing Texas hold’em poker. Lessons will help you understand the details of the game. Since it is so easy to learn, you and your friends can play it within minutes after the instructions.

Easy Steps To Learn Texas Hold’em

If you can’t understand the subtleties of Poker, then Texas hold’em is for you. In this piece, nuggets of wisdom will be shared from start to the exciting end. A game can start with six players. The dealer provides each player with cards called hole cards. These cards are placed face down.

Starting the game

The betting begins and follows a clockwise direction. Players should call or fold the bets until the allowed bet is reached. This is Capping the Pot. The first person to play should be from the left of the dealer. He is the blind, or the forced bet. There are blinds in this game because there are no equal bets.

The first player is called the Under the Gun player. He makes the first decision in a betting round. His decision is critical for his game. The first of the valuable Texas hold’em poker lessons demands that the first player, make a prudent bid to hold his game.

The Flop

When the pre-flop betting is done, the dealer gives each player three additional cards, face up. This is now The Flop. The cards dealt are no longer card holes but community cards. These are cards available for all players for use in the hand. Once all cards are in, the players can determine if they have a good or weak hand.

Texas hold’em poker lessons goes into finer points of the game and warn against placing a bet if you have a poor hand. Fold your hand when it is your turn to place a bet. Hold on to the card, don’t be bluffed and don’t bluff especially when playing online.

Betting Frenzy and The Turn

The betting continues until the pot is capped. The first player has several options. He can check, make a low bet, or decide against betting. The next player can do the same, and raise or make the same bet.

The dealer distributes the fourth community card. This is the Turn. Take heed of the wisdom of Texas hold’em poker lessons at this point. Fold your hand when you see that your chances are poor. Betting skyrockets until the pot is capped, or all players have had their turn.

When two players are left, there is a showdown. They will reveal their cards. The lucky player has the highest hand so he takes the pot. The last of the Texas hold’em poker lessons is to study the quirks of the game carefully. It is a matter of technique not luck, but it pays to be wise than very sorry.

Poker profits ‘hit by Euro 2008′

August 4th, 2008 by admin

Pacific Poker internet gaming firm 888 Holdings has blamed this summer’s European football championships for a 10% fall in poker revenues.

The company said net gaming revenue from its poker arm was 20 million US dollars (£10.2m) during the quarter to June 30. This was the same sum as the prior year, and 10% down on the previous three months.

Gibraltar-based 888 said the slowdown was “in line with general industry weakness during the Euro 2008 football tournament”.

Revenues per active poker customer during the second quarter were also 9% down compared to the first three months this year, to 116 US dollars (£59).

But 888 added that revenues from the group’s core casino operation were 1% ahead at 35 million US dollars (£17.8m), compared to the first quarter of the year.

The 54-year-old limousine company owner, who says he is a frequent gambler at the Borgata, said a poker room manager followed him into the restroom and informed him that patrons at his table were complaining about his body odor.

Poker: How to make the most of a so-so hand

August 1st, 2008 by admin

Playing middle pairs can be a tricky proposition, especially when the board pairs or anovercard comes, but if you figure out what specific bets mean from specific players, you can make the most of a so-so hand.

At the $15,000-buy-in Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic at Las Vegas’ Bellagio in 2007, Erick Lindgren picked up pocket 9s under the gun. With blinds at $800-$1,600 plus a $200 ante, Lindgren, an aggressive pro, raised to $4,500.

“I was raising to thin the field and mix it up,” said Lindgren, winner of two World Poker Tour titles.

Three players in late position called, as did Raymond Davis in the big blind.

“When I got four callers,” Lindgren said, “I wanted to flop a 9.”
